Brand media: when a company needs its own media
Brand media is a publication a brand creates about its audience's topic rather than about itself. People read it for its content, and the brand gains trust and a place in the agenda. You need it when advertising does not work or is restricted, the decision cycle is long and the audience values expertise.
How brand media differs from SMM and a blog
| Corporate blog or SMM | Brand media | |
|---|---|---|
| About what | about the company, its products and promotions | about a topic that matters to the audience |
| Who reads it | those who already know the brand | everyone interested in the topic |
| Who makes it | marketing | an editorial team with subject experts |
| Main metric | reach and clicks | a loyal audience, mentions, trust |
When a brand needs its own media
- Advertising is restricted by law: pharma, finance. Media lets you talk about the problem rather than the drug.
- The audience is narrow and professional: B2B, telecom, IT. You cannot buy professionals' trust with advertising.
- You need to change attitudes to a topic. For example, to explain to 25-year-olds that joints concern them too.
- Competitors all say the same thing, and the only way to stand out is a point of view.
Examples
- bailanys is an independent Telegram media about telecom in Kazakhstan and Central Asia. 2,700 subscribers in six months, with top industry managers among its readers, and two bronzes at Tagline Awards 2025.
- “Life on Ultra” is an Instagram media about sport for non-athletes for Teraflex Ultra. In the first two months: 5 million views, an average ER of 6.26% and pharmacy sales growth of more than 90%.
- “Pain Navigator” is a media for patients and neurologists about pain as a phenomenon: culture, anthropology, evidence-based medicine.
How to launch
- Find a topic where the audience's interests and the brand's expertise intersect.
- Decide how visible the brand will be: from an independent media to media “from the brand”.
- Assemble an editorial team and bring in experts.
- Write an editorial policy and rules for product integration.
- Plan for promotion: without it, media grows too slowly.
- Give the project time: media is evaluated over six months to a year, not a month.
